Computer security measures to take to lock down your pc from hackers and thieves

What computer security measures should I be taking to make my computer as well as the files on it air-tight against hackers and thieves ? This article was created so the average user could easily make their computer as secure as possible. Trust me if you follow the advice I gave you below yourcomputer will be extremely secure and almost impenetrable. Well let’s get crackin.

Easy Ways to make your computer more secure

  • The most important way to exercise computer security is to use a secure password when you first setup your pc. DO NOT USE A DICTIONARY WORD IN ANY LANGUAGE. If it is a word there is a program that in a matter of minutes can hack it. Trust me I have some of them an have even used them. It is scary how fast easily dictionary passwords can be hacked. Even combinations of words are easily hacked.

  • What makes a good password?Well your password should be at least 8 characters. It should not be a word and it should have at least one or more special character (eg. !@#$) or a number.

  • If you are attached to the internet always make certain you are behind a router with a firewall on. Although these firewalls are not enterprise class they are good enough to keep most of the baddies from getting in. More importantly you can surf around safely behind one of these.

  • Setup the security options on internet explorer by following the instructions below.

First click open internet explorer and click tools and go down to internet options

Click on the advanced tab and check the boxes as below in (figure-1) and (figure-2). Only the following boxes should be left unchecked. Allow active content to run in files in my computer. Allow software to run or install even when the signature is invalid. Use SSL 2.0. Also the phishing filter should be on automatic website checking.

Also while you are in internet explorer make certain the pop-up blocker is enabled. Go into the privacy tab and make certain there is a check mark in the turn on pop-up blocker.

  • Use firefox and install the script blocker. Actually for this reason firefox is a superior browser as there are not as many scripts and you can block them or allow them as you please

  • Make certain Windows firewall is on. Windows firewall is very underrated and does a fantastic job but it has to be on or it doesn’t work too well. Soon there will be an article on how to enable windows firewall if you don’t know how

  • Update your computer with the latest security patches from Microsoft. Updates are great. Microsoft actually has computers on the internet called “honey-pots” that have various versions of the operating system to test how secure it is. When a hacker gets in they find and attempt to repair the bug. Pretty clever huh ?

It is scary how fast an unprotected computer can be hacked. Last time a checked an unpatched computer on the internet without a firewall get a worm or virus in 13 minutes. That’s right 13 minutes. Wow good reason to read this article right.

The most important aspect of computer security

  • Finally, one of the most important steps to computer security is also to make certain there is adequate computer maintenance. Without virus checkers and spyware checkers the other steps could be pretty worthless. Click here to go from computer security to personal computer maintenance
