Basic Computer Tutorial - Using the Control Panel (Display Settings)
We are at the 7th installment of our basic computer tutorial which covers display settings. This is a very important section as people are always wanting to change the look and feel of their display. Also we will learn how to change our wallpaper, install a screensaver, add a second monitor, as well as change the graphics settings on your pc. Well without further delay I will begin with this section.
Accessing the Display Settings
Quick and Easy Way Right click on the desktop and go to properties

It will bring up the box below
Click on start and click on control panel (see below)
Next click on control panel and it will pull up the screen below

Click appearance and themes to bring up the menu below
Click on display and it will pull up the screen below which is the display screen.

The first tab is pretty self explanatory all you are doing there is changing the themes. The themes are actually what the style of the desktop and icons are. It is the look of feel of windows. Just click around to see what you like best. I am using Windows classic because that is the way I roll. Just use whatever you are comfortable with. The next tab is the desktop.

There are many different backgrounds you can use. These are also commonly referred to as wallpaper. You can also search online and download additional ones. Really the only requirement is that they are one of the supported files as listed below. You can put pictures web pages etc. as your background. Here is what happens when you click the browse button.

The supported files are: background files, .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .dib, .png, .htm, .html.
If you click customize desktop you can customize the desktop icons, and change the various icons.
Also you can set your desktop to download a web page.
The next tab allows you to setup and customize a screensaver, change the power options on your laptop to conserve battery power. Also there are several different options as to how the computer will respond when the battery runs low, alarms, how it shows you power consumption and the like. Anyway here is what the initial box looks like.

You can select the various screensavers and then from there change the settings in those screensavers. The screensavers all have different settings and here is an example of one of the group of settings.

The power button allows you to change the settings on when to turn off the monitor, hard drives as well as put the system in system standby.

The alarms tab allows you to customize when you are warned as far as when the power is low.

The next tab gives you a visual representation of the power level of the batteries.

The next tab allows you to set the power saving options of the computer see below.

The final tab allows you to change the settings as to when your computer goes into hibernate mode. Which is when the computer stores whatever you had in memory and then shuts down. When you bring it back up it returns to its original state.

The next tab controls the appearance of all the windows that come up while you are working in windows. There are a ton of settings you can adjust here to choose whatever you like best.

If you click the effects button it gives you several different options you can adjust as you see fit see below.

The next button controls the advanced appearance.

The settings tab allows you to configure the settings on your hardware, change your graphics display, number of colors, troubleshoot and even change your driver. Anyways here is the initial box you get.

Under display there is a drop down box. This represents the different monitors. Also note there is color quality the higher you set it the more screen resolution you can have. If you click the identify button it will tell you which monitor you are currently using. If you click the troubleshoot button you get the Windows help center troubleshooter just like below

The final button the advanced button is really for people who are more advanced (like yours truly). I would not advise going in there and messing with anything because you can really mess things up and if you don't know how to fix them you could be left with a hefty repair bill or a computer where you cannot view anything. Neither option is very good.
Well that wraps it up for this installment of the basic computer tutorial I'll see you all next week.
