This is one of the most common questions when someone finds out I am a computer person. Finally I have a definite answer to that very question. Well I don’t but PC World does. PC World tested several software packages set up to remove virus software and scripts and came up with the top 10 software packages. Actually some of the free virus scan packages did better than some of the big name anti-virus programs.

Well there is actually no survey on this topic that I know of. Most the computer people I work with agree there are three freebies that stand head and shoulders above the rest. The name of the three programs are spybot – search and destroy,ad-aware,and spyware terminator. What is so amazing is they are free of charge.
Ad-aware is made by lavasoft. They claim over a quarter of billion people have downloaded their software. This could be true because it is really good and pretty much everyone that knows computers recommends you use it. They also have an upgraded version if you would like a little more juice.
Spybot-search and destroy is made by a company called pepimk software. This is a shareware program which means if you like it please donate. Free Spyware Removal Utility Here is the final one of the big three. Unfortunately spyware has gotten so out of control that you really need to run multiple utilities to do the job adequately. NOTE: Most of these programs warn to be careful before you remove something as you could potentially harm your computer. I have never done this nor have I ever known anyone who has. Although you may be thinking the PC world article is a little old it is still accurate. Also they are unbiased and a not making any money except from subscriptions to their magazine so they really don’t care. I personally own the BitDefender suite which also has a personal firewall. Unfortunately a personal firewall can be confusing to a beginner as the program is always “pestering” you about whether or not it is ok to go to the internet or allow a program access out or in. Blah blah blah. Mostly you can click yes but it can confuse a new users. A firewall is definitely needed if you are directly connected to the internet and is advised if you are behind a router (which usually does possess some firewalling and security capabilities).
