Spyware Symptoms and What To Do About It
Spyware are malicious programs that install themselves on your PC without your consent. Besides adversely affecting the performance of your PC, they also put your personal information at risk. Spyware programs are usually bundled up as a hidden component with other software, such as, freeware or shareware programs and audio files. They creep onto your computer when you download programs to which they are secretly attached to.
Once on your PC, a spyware program has the potential to create havoc. A spyware program collects your personal information such as email addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers and passes it to some one else on the web. It also monitors your web related activities, such as the name of websites you visit or the kind of information you search on web. Besides fiddling with your personal information, a spyware program also infects the Windows registry with a large number of malicious entries.
You can look for the following symptoms for signs that your PC is infected with spyware programs.
- There are additional toolbars, links or list of websites in the favorite folder that you did not create or install.
- The default home page of your web browser has changed.
- Your browser is taking you to a site different than the one you want to open.
- The number of pop up ads on your machine has suddenly increased.
The above symptoms are a definite giveaway that malicious spyware programs are installed on your system. However, some spyware programs do not give any indication of their existence and silently inflict the damage.
It is recommended that you use a good anti-spyware program to keep your machine free from malicious spyware programs. Anti-spyware programs provide two-step protection. First, they give real-time protection by shielding your machine from potential spyware attacks while you browse or download something from the Internet. Secondly, they clean existing spyware programs from your machine. You can use your anti-spyware program to scan your system’s operating system files, the Windows registry and installed programs for spyware infestation and display the list of possible threats.
You can also install Firewall to safeguard your machine from spyware programs. Firewall monitors the external traffic entering your PC by acting as a protective wall between your machine and an external network, such as the Internet. However, one drawback is that a firewall may prevent you from downloading certain applications from the internet. If you face a problem with downloads and program updates, you may have to disable or remove firewall to continue with your activity. If you remove firewall, ensure that an anti-spyware program is installed and running on your machine. Also, try to obtain a more compatible firewall solution for your PC or computer network.
To prevent spyware infections, you must also scan external devices, such as USB devices for spyware programs before attaching them to the computer. This will help you prevent errors, such as error “0x80070052 that occurs when the USB card you are attaching is infected with spyware programs.
In addition to an anti-spyware program, we also recommend that you use an advanced registry cleaner. An advanced registry cleaner can perform a deep scan of your registry and remove any embedded spyware registry keys. This will enable you to maintain a healthy registry and keep your PC free from registry errors.
