Windows XP Updates

Note: Before you download any Windows XP updates make certain all programs are closed. Often it will restart after an update so make certain all your work is saved before you download any updates.

I wanted to try to make this site a place where you could go to get all of your important computer related needs filled. A one stop shop like Target or Walmart that has everything you could ever want to know and then some. My goal is for this site to do that. Anyway I figured since most folks are using Windows I should definitely include an article about Microsoft Windows XP updates.

Why should I use any windows updates ?

Ok so you are probably wondering why should I update my computer when it is running great? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right ? Well maybe for your car or your house’s air conditioner but for windows not so much. The main reason to do windows updates is to insure that your computer is safe and secure from the newest bugs, glitches and security holes. If your computer is attached to the internet you should do windows xp updates on a regular basis just to keep your computer safe and secure.

The Easy way to get Windows XP Updates

If all you would like to do is update your computer in an easy fashion you can just open internet explorer (the big blue E). From there just click on tools and then click windows updates. You will then be taken to the beautiful Microsoft windows update website. I would recommend that you use the express install. However, if you would like to have a little more control over the process just click on custom and pick whatever updates you want.

Should I use automatic updates for my Windows XP Updates ?

Really that is a personal decision. I do but I know how to back out any changes in case something gets added I don’t want. This is probably the preferred way to do it and it is easy to back out and remove unwanted Windows or any software for that matter. Here is how to do it:

  1. Left Click on start and left click the Control Panel Icon
  2. Left Click on Add/Remove Programs (see below)

3. It will bring up this screen. For the sake of simplicity left click on the add or remove programs icon (see below)

  • It will pull up the below screen.
    1. Put a check mark (left click) in the box next to show updates. Up comes all the updates scroll down to the problematic one and left click it. It highlights and a remove button appears.

    6. Click remove and you are done.

    7. Notice you can also click add to add various other windows components. You will need the Windows XP CD for this.

    Windows XP Updates Sites

I was surfing the internet and I found several sites that offered Microsoft updates. Quite frankly I don’t understand why anyone would go to them and not directly to Microsoft. Here are some reasons why you should only use Microsoft to get your updates from.

    • You can be almost certain they are not corrupt and are legitimate. After all if you go to Bob’s website and download what he says is a good update how can you be certain you are not downloading the update along with some of Bob’s custom made spyware or worse a keylogger.

    • Always make certain the software is from a legitimate source. Microsoft is legitimate, cnet download.com is legitimate, Tucows.com is legitimate. This site is legitimate. Downloading software from questionable sites is like rolling the dice. For instance what is stopping Vladimir from Russia from setting a website and advertising free software. You innocently download it and it is a Trojan virus or a key logger or God knows what. How will Vladimir ever be captured and brought to justice in the United States.
